Doomscrolling
But Jed is STILL lit by Art, Music, and Story
My apologies for not having written in so long.
Political developments have left me mostly speechless over the past months. Yes, I might be what Nate Silver described as a “resistance liberal,” so I trust Heather Cox Richardson, Robert Reich, Robert Hubbell, Jessica Craven, Bill McKibben, Diana Butler Bass, Wendy MacNaughton, — all of these people are on Substack. Corporate media not so much anymore. A constant theme has been the anguish of seeming powerless as I have watched cherished ideals of decency, justice, rule of law, and international world order being decimated. Many of the writers cited above DO have suggestions on HOW to push back. In particular, these resonate:
Robert Reich: America’s Gestapo: What you can do to stop ICE’s mayhem and How To Mobilize America Against Fascism: What you can do, beyond party politics
Jessica Craven: Chop Wood, Carry Water 1/15
Robert Hubbell: Mass protests are the last line of defense against ICE's assault on our peace, safety, and security
Bill McKibben: Solar as Solidarity: It's not just for saving planets any more
Wendy MacNaughton: Note, January 15.
Diana Butler Bass: Witnesses to the Bad News: The cross comes before any good news
Not on Substack and not so much about pushing back against the regime, but always inspiring to me, is Maria Popova’s website and newsletter, The Marginalian, in particular this recent post:
Reading so much online has been a distraction from three of my great loves, but I’ll have updates on art, music, and story in the coming days. Yay!
